Sabyasachi - The "King of Kitsch"

Sabyasachi Mukherjee a.k.a the “King of Kitsch” has earned a place in the hall of fashion fame with his unique style and artistic taste. This young talented designer has received accolades and earned the respect of fashionistas around the globe. His work has a sentimental appeal; with gaudy undertones - just enough to make it hip; a true artistic fusion of traditional and contemporary designs thus kitsch.

The 28 year old Kolkata based designer, graduated from the esteemed National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in 1999. From then on, it has been a journey with no looking back. Sabyasachi launched his own label right after graduation and currently owns a retail chain in all the major cities of India.

In 2001, Sabyasachi won the Femina British Council Most Outstanding Young Designer of India award. In 2003, he made his International label by bagging the grand winner award at Mercedes New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore. In 2004, he represented India at the Milan Fashion Week. Talking about fashion week, he has been a participant at the New York Fashion Week for the past three years.

One thing I love about Sabyasachi is that he is a diehard fan of Indian textile, Indian style and culture. His creations comprise of Indian traditional wear, bridal wear and Indo-western wear. While his contemporaries are taking inspiration from the west, he draws his inspiration from the Indian culture, promoting the Indian heritage. He describes his collection as “an international styling with an Indian soul”. Sabyasachi uses unusual fabrics, texturing and detailing, 'fusion' of styles 'patch-worked' with gorgeous embellishments in a vibrant eclectic color palette to make the feeling of going back to the ancient and medieval ages.

Much kudos goes to this young designer, for showcasing the true heritage of India enthralling the global audience.
