Unlike what most of us feel, night creams form a vital part of any beauty regime for men and women both
Women all over the world have tried all that’s possible to enhance their beauty since the dawn of time. Stories like princesses bathing in the pure milk of asses or rubbing rose petals to get the pink tinge on the face etc seem believable given the insatiable desire to look good.
How long night creams date back in the dynamic world of beauty products will probably remain unknown but there popularity can’t be denied nonetheless. But though accurate records aren’t found, there is mention of Roman ladies going to bed with olive oil on the face to reduce wrinkling. The concept is difficult to define accurately, but to be talking precisely, any cream that can be applied before bedtime and left overnight for some cosmetic purposes can be called a ‘night cream’; otherwise wearing makeup or cosmetics overnight is considered unhealthy for the skin. Aesthetician Neha Khare says that night creams are the only exception when one can wear anything at all before going to bed; cleansing off all makeup and/or grime and washing the face well at night is a must otherwise. But for most of us the thought is like ‘why night creams when we don so much throughout the day?’ We would rather slobber the face and neck with moisturiser, sunscreen et al for the entire day thinking that everything is taken care of. But Neha says, “Night creams are as important as all other day-time creams. Especially in extreme winters and summers our skin suffers the most and it becomes vital that we give a little extra attention.” Apparently the metabolic activity of the skin cells is at the highest when we sleep; so all the possible repair can take place then. This is probably why the concept came into existence and people began experimenting with olive oil, almond oil, milk, cream etc.
Media professional Madhavi Patwardhan notes that night creams are often ridiculously overpriced. “If you are looking for reputed, reliable brands then be prepared to shell out anything over Rs. 250-300; the prices go as high as a few thousand rupees for imported creams!” she says. But where have all the home products and inexpensive ways gone then? Skin and hair expert Shama Rizwan comes to the rescue with some easy, out-of-the-kitchen ingredients for effective night treatments:
1.Few drops rose water + olive oil – for tired, dry skin
2.Almond oil + few drops of milk + few saffron strands – for instant glow in the morning; anti-wrinkle treatment
3.Whole milk + lemon juice – natural fairness formula
4.Whole milk, applied in a thin coat with cotton – for baby-soft skin in the morning
Shama also adds most old-fashioned night creams are a blend of various oils (sesame, olive, castor, coconut, almond etc), often cocoa butter, rose water etc.
Night creams not just moisturise the skin well for a brighter effect in the morning, but regular use also improves skin elasticity and radiance. “However, one must know one’s skin type before picking any night cream; wrong choices can lead to disastrous results like acne, rashes etc. You must also consult a dermatologist if you already suffer from skin problems,” advices Neha. She also adds that areas around the eyes, eye-lids, lips should be avoided as the skin is super-sensitive there. “For best results (and to avoid staining your bedcovers) the cream should be massaged lightly onto the face and neck at least half-an-hour before you go to bed,” she says, also adding that washing the face and neck thoroughly in the morning is an absolute must.
