A Dialogue Between A Mother and A Daughter

Posted in

The 8th of May is celebrated as ‘Mother’s day. This day is usually very important in every child’s life, perhaps because a mother has a very unique relation with their child. Amongst all the relations that a human being ever witnesses, this relation stands out, because through the ages it has been associated with a delicate bond of love, affection and sacrifices galore. Of course over the years, like all other relations, the role of a mother and what she shares with her child has also changed, if not drastically, to a large extent.

The Pain of Being a Pretty Face

A friend on my Face Book friend list had written this caption on a picture, “Just because it looks pretty does not make it any less correct!” – Ruma Chakravarti
My mind wandered, taking me back to many years ago, a day back in college. It was my final year of University and we were having a debate on a passage from Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ in the canteen over umpteen cups of tea.

Rules that Govern the Universe

In the early half of April 2012, News headlines all over the world screamed- ‘Miss Universe pageant to allow transgender contestants’
Different reactions from various parts of the world poured in, with some expressing outrage, some commenting on its implications on the other so called ‘normal’ contestants and others commenting on the very validity of the pageant. In one of the websites that carried the news, a user commented- “The contest is already full of fake breasts, what's the big deal about one fake vagina?”

Is Divorce Still a Big Deal?

Posted in

November 2004, its 7.30 in the evening, I am settled on the couch with a book, when my phone rings. On the other end is Soma, a close friend and photographer, mother of a beautiful 4 year old. Just as I’m about to settle into a chat, she informs me crisply, “Vedant and I have decided to file for divorce”. I’m concerned and immediately ask her if I should come over?

Since the time I was a child I have been fascinated by the art of story telling. I would watch every year the Ramayana being enacted as a part of the Ramrila celebrations, coinciding with Dusherra.

The Home,within the ‘Homemaker"

About two months back, I suddenly had a crisis with my house maid taking a maternity leave and no replacement in sight. In what looked like a rather desperate situation, a desperate me climbed walls (literally this time) to do the neighborly social connect and find a solution to the problem.
Just then I saw my neighbor, who suddenly assumed very interesting proportions, humming to herself while pottering around her verandah.

Under Their Majestic Shade

My ten year old daughter comes home from school and hands me a notice with a dull face. The notice reads, “The school would like to honor the role of grandparents, in every child’s life with a cultural program put up by the children themselves. All grandparents are invited” I look at my daughter and ask her why she is sad.

About a week ago, around 8 in the evening, I heard tremendous commotion somewhere close in the neighborhood. The screams and wails were so loud and disturbing that I decided to check it out. As I walked down the lane, I noticed that few houses beyond mine, a woman was being pushed and pushed around by a man.

On the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri, I remember an episode that happened during my University days. It was the eve of Shivratri ; the girls in the hostel were very excited about fasting the next day and going for the puja in the morning.Maha Shivratri, usually falls on the 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna.

Somewhere in the late nineties I had seen a movie called Primal Fear, an American crime drama thriller film directed by Gregory Hoblit and starring Richard Gere and Edward Norton. It was a fascinating film and I followed it up with one of Sidney Sheldon’s book’s ‘Tell Me Your Dreams’.
